Jack -in-the-Pulpit
The common Jack-in-the-pulpit is a perennial woodland tuber producing a 1 to 2' green stalk supporting two three-lobed leaves. At the stalks terminus a flower-like hooded pitcher forms colored purpled or green on the exterior with green and lighter green striped coloration on the interior. Colorations are quite variable. A bulbous spadix protrudes from the interior of the pitcher. The hermaphrodite plant produces a mass of green berries on the spadix which become bright red as the fruit matures. Plants require about 5 years to bear fruit. Prefers part sun to full shade in moist well-drained humus-rich soils. USDA zone 5.
